What is the nervous system made up of?
The brain, spinal cord and nerves
What neurone carries information from the sensory receptor to the csn?
Sensory neurone
What carries information to glands or muscles?
Motor neurone
What is an effector?
A muscle or gland that responds in the cns
What is the difference between a neurone and a nerve?
A nerve is hundreds of neurones bundled together
What are reflex actions?
Rapid automatic responses
What are stimuli detected by?
Receptors
What is a synapse?
The gap between two neurones.
How do impulses get across a synapse?
Chemicals
What is a neurone?
A specialised nerve cell
What is a receptor?
Specialised cells that detect stimuli
What is the sensory neurone?
This carries the nerve impulse from the receptor to the central nervous system
What is the motor neurone?
Carries the nerve impulses from the central nervous system to an effector
What is the relay neurone?
Connects a motor and sensory neurone in the central nervous system and is involved in a reflex arc
What is a stimulus?
Changes in the environment
What are effectors?
They carry out the response and are either muscles or glands
What is a nerve
A bundle of neurones
What are nerve impulses?
Electrical message that passes along a neurone
In a reflex action what does the spinal cord act as?
The co-ordinator
