the nervous sytem Flashcards
(12 cards)
human nervous system - autonomic nervous system
governs vital functions e.g breathing and heart rate
transmits info to and from internal organs
human nervous system - somatic nervous system
muscle movements, reflex actions -
transmits information from sensory receptors to the CNS
human nervous system - sympathetic nervous system
fight or flight , increases body activity by activating internal organs for vigorous activities or emergency
human nervous system - parasympathetic nervous system
rest and digest, controls the relaxed states - conserving resources
human nervous system - brain
centre of all conscious awareness
the outer layer of the brain = cerebral cortex (3mm thick) distinguishes our higher mental functions from animals
Brain is divided into 2 hemispheres
human nervous system - spinal cord
extension of brain
responsible for reflex actions
it passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerves to the PNS
2 main functions of human nervous system
- to collect process and respond to info from environment
- to co-ordinate the working of different organs and cells
what is the central nervous system made up of
the brain and spinal cord
the peripheral nervous system PNS - structure and function
transmits messages to and from the nervous system
subdivided into
1. autonomic nervous system
2. somatic nervous system
what is the autonomic nervous system subdivided into
sympathetic nervous system
parasympathetic nervous system
receptors
detect stimulie
effectors
bring about a response to a stimulus
includes muscles and glands
