Who did Luke write to?
- Wrote to the marginalized to show that God was a universal God

What was Luke’s objective ?
To prove that God was a God to all, a universal God
How was Luke’s writing different from Matthew’s?
- he was not greatly interested in the life of Jesus as a fulfillment of Jewish prophecy
- rarely even quoted the Old Testament
- he writes Hebrew words in Greek such that the Greek would understand
- He never uses the Jewish term Rabbi b.ut uses a Greek word meaning master
- on the genealogy of Jesus unlike in Matthew he tracks it back to Adam the founder of the human race not Abraham the founder of the Jewish race

How does he show interest in prayer?
E.g before he chose his disciples, at his baptism ,at the transfiguration and at the cross
How does he show interest in praise?
- in like the phrase “praising God “ is repeated more times than in all the New Testament books combined together
How does he show interest in emancipation woman?
In the Jewish society woman were seen at the bottom of the social pyramid such that man would pray thanking God that they are not gentiles, slaves or women
E.g the birth narrative is told from Mary’s point of view, read about Elizabeth and the woman who anointed Jesus feet
- other scholars assume that Luke was from Macedonian were woman were more emancipation hence he wrote in this way
How does he show interest in universalism of God?
- Wrote about the parable of the Good Samaritan
- when the lepers were healed, the grateful one was a Samaritan
- shows Jesus speaking the gentiles who were called “unclean” which was not permitted by the Orthodox Jews

- Jesus tells the parable of the rich man and poor man
- on the beatitudes Luke says “ blessed are the poor” unlike in Matthew were it says “ blessed are the poor in spirit”
The difference between his writings and the writings of Matthew in response to the marginalized ?
- in Matthew it says when Jesus told the disciples to go preach he told them not to go to the Samaritan’s but Luke completely omits it

- Elizabeth who could not bare a child having a child
- the angle appeared to Mary instead of John ( also emphasizes on no sexual encounter which is similar to the Greek mythology of gods having sex with humans to produce babies )
- Mary visits Elizabeth still highlighting the importance of women and the presence of the Holy Spirit as the baby leaped with joy
- Jesus meets with Anna showing the theme of interest in woman

To convince them that Jesus was the king waited Messiah, the fulfillment of Prophecy in the Old Testament hence he included a lot of prophecy e.g Jesus birth and name, slaughtering of children, Joseph settling in Nazareth

- starts of mentioning the genealogy of Jesus as a descendant of Abraham

- in the genealogy Rahab from Jericho who was a prostitute and Ruth who was a Moabite are mentioned
- woman are mentioned which was not usual as they were not that important in most genealogies
Similarities in the gospel of Matthew and Luke
- that Mary was betrothed to Joseph
- the angel told both of them about the babies name
- Jesus was born in Bethlehem
Differences in the gospel of Matthew and Luke
- news is told to Mary in Luke will in Matthew it is told to Joseph
- the first people to visit Jesus in Matthew are the wise man whilst in Luke are the shepherds
In the birth narrative how does Matthew show the Messiahship of Jesus ?
- he is born in Bethlehem a birth place of the descendants of David
- the wise man brung gold symbolizing the kingship of Jesus
- brought frankincense which was associated with worship acknowledging him as divine
- frankincense was only given to priest acknowledging that Jesus was a priest between man and God
- given myrrh which was for anointing the dead and healing symbolizing his suffering and death
- prophecy was fulfilled in Jeremiah when Herod realized that he was tricked and order all babies to be killed
