A

Matthew Parker issued a “book of advertisements” which laid down rules for conducting services and wearing vestiments. Many Puritan priests refused because they were similar to those worn by catholic priests.

A

-Elizabeth asked him to ban all prophesyings as she thought they would encourage rebellions
-Grindal didn’t think they were dangerous so refused to follow these orders
-becuase of this, Elizabeth suspended him from his duties and issued her own instructions to bishops to stop prophesying

A

-Replaced Grindal as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1583
-he had little sympathy and enforced strict control over the clergy to prevent any Presbyterian practiced

A

Some Puritains had to go underground. Robert Browne set up on of these breakaway movements in Norwich. He was imprisoned.

Other leaders were ordered to be hung for handing out pamphlets
