The Research Enterprise Flashcards
(12 cards)
What does tenacity mean as a way of knowing?
believing something is true just because you’ve alway heard it or believed it even without evidence
ie. opposites attract
How would you define authority as a way of knowing?
is accepting something as true because an expert or someone in power said so
ie. Trusting a doctor
What is rationalism?
rationalism means using logic and reasoning to arrive at a conclusion without checking it through observations
ie. all human are mortal, socrates is human therefore socrates is mortal
What does empiricism mean?
learning through direct observations or experiences
ie measuring reaction times in an experiment
What is descriptive methods?
are ways to observe and describe behaviour without changing anything
ie. case studies, surveys
What is correlation methods?
to measure the relationship between 2 variables but don’t show cause and effect
ie. studying if more than 2 house or studying is related to higher test scores
What is the experimental method?
involved manipulating one variable to see if it effects another showing cause and effect
What is a correlation study?
looks at how closely 2 variables are related, using statistics called a correlation coefficient
What is the independent variable?
is the one the researcher changes or controls to see it’s effect
What is the dependent variable?
what is being measured, it depends in the independent variable
What is inferential statistics?
helps researchers make conclusion about a larger population based on data from a sample
What is pseudoscience?
look scientific but does not follow the scientific methods as is lacks evidence and cannot be tested
ie. miracles, astrology
