What was the Restoration in 1660?
The return of the monarchy in England, when Charles II became king after the fall of Cromwell’s republic.
Who was Charles II?
The son of Charles I; he became king during the Restoration and was known as the ‘Merry Monarch.’
What was life like under Charles II?
More relaxed than under Cromwell; theatres reopened, fashion returned, and the monarchy was popular again (at first).
What major disasters happened during Charles II’s reign?
The Great Plague in 1665 and The Great Fire of London in 1666.
What caused the Glorious Revolution?
Fear that King James II (a Catholic) would make England Catholic again, and his disregard for Parliament’s power.
Who were William and Mary?
Protestant rulers invited by Parliament to take the throne from James II in 1688.
Why is it called the ‘Glorious’ Revolution?
Because it was mostly peaceful — James II fled, and there was very little fighting.
What was the Bill of Rights (1689)?
A law that limited the power of the monarch and confirmed the rights of Parliament and the people.
What kind of monarchy was created after 1689?
A constitutional monarchy, where the monarch shared power with Parliament and had to follow the law.
Why is the Glorious Revolution important in British history?
It marked the beginning of modern democracy in Britain, where kings and queens could no longer rule without Parliament.
