When and why did the London docklands go into decline?

A

Between 1950 to 1970 due to advances in goods transportation
and ships being too big to fit along the river.
Got redeveloped from 1981 as the London Docklands Development association (LDDC) that aimed to improve social, economic and environmental conditions

  • New comers didn’t mix with locals breaking the east end community
  • wealthy new comers allowed local shop and recreational prices to rise
  • most new jobs created went to people who lived outside the area as locals weren’t very technically skilled

  • city airport in the royal docks handled over 1/2 a million in 1995
  • unemployment has fallen from 14.2 - 9.5%
  • 7,900 council houses were refurbished
  • 160,000 trees were planted and 17 conservation areas were created

  • Because over 50% of the docklands was derelict with many empty warehouses and factories
  • by 1981 larger ships could no longer reach London
  • by 1981, jobs were scarce, the docks closed, transport was poor, most 19th century houses needed repair, lack of basic services
