why was there a rising in the vendee
A
- Area in central west france
- Close to the sites of the chouan uprising
rural, conservative catholic area with lots of refractory priest - Selling of church land had brought in bourgeoisie land owner who raised rent
- At time of inflation and disrupted food supplies this left the peasants worse off than they had been under the ancien regime
- Local noblemen also disliked the revolution and were of military experience with the skills to organise an army
- Uprising began as a protest against the levy for 300,000 men

- Catholic and royal army of the vendee was formed on 14th march
- Cholet was seized
- Massacres of local officials, juring priests and national guards
- Guerilla warfare spread through the countryside
- Continued to spread and by june the rebels had seized loire, angers, saumur and were advising towards paris
