Q

As Interactionists do not believe in structural approaches, how do they believe that our identities are created considering the Role of the Family?

A

They believe that our identities are created through interactions with others and therefore socialisation is much more of a ‘negotiated’ process, rather than being a ‘passive’ process which is the case with the structural approaches. For example, rather than having to teach your children pro-capitalist values (as in Marxism), interactionists believe that you have scope for deciding in the values that you teach your children, and therefore you may teach them that capitalism is not a good thing.

Interactionists believe that play is important to the development of the ‘self’ and through play, children become social beings. Taking the role of others, such as doctors or nurses, allows them to take into account the reactions of others and therefore they begin to understand how their actions generate specific reactions.
