The Roles Of The Components In Performing The Functions Of The Respiratory System B2.8 Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
Where is the respiratory system largely contained?
A
Within the thorax or chest cavity
2
Q
What is the basis of the respiratory system?
A
The basis of gas exchange in humans
3
Q
What are the components of the respiratory system?
A
- 2 lungs
- mouth and nose leading to the trachea
- trachea splits into 2 bronchi, one leading into each lung
- bronchi divide into bronchioles and then alveoli
- pleural membrane
- ribs
- intercostal muscles
- diaphragm
4
Q
What is the alveoli?
A
Small air filled sacs that have walls consisting of a single layer of thin epithelial cells. They are the site for gas exchange
5
Q
Inspiration involves contraction of two sets of muscles:
A
- diaphragm contracts, which causes it to move down
- the external intercostal muscle contracts, which causes the ribs to move up and outwards
