The Scientific Method/Experiment Flashcards
(27 cards)
Scientific Theory
Explain using set of principles to organize/predict observation
What must you always do with a theory?
You have to put it to the test
hypothesis
testable prediction
What should you be aware of when testing?
Bias.
What a good experiment always be?
It should be able to be replicated- use different group of people and get same outcome.
Theory useful if:
- organizes range of observation
2. implies clear prediction
Case study
research method- one person studied in depth to find something true of us all
Survey
research method to get self-reported behaviors/attitudes
survey pros and cons
pros- cheap, anonymous, fast, and diverse
cons- word effect, lying, and low response rate
False Consensus Effect
tend to think that others agree with us/ have the same mindset.
Population
all the cases in the group being studied
What to do to make good sample?
use random sampling; gives each person a chance to be studied
Naturalistic observation
observing and recording behavior in a natural environment.
what do observation, case study, and survey not do?
does not explain behavior
correlation
the way 2 factors predict on another
positive correlation
when two variables go in the same direction (up/up or down/down)
negative correlation
when two variables go in the opposite direction (up/down or down/up)
What does correlation not do?
it does not explain cause only shows relationship between factors.
illusory correlation
perceiving correlation when non exists
Experiment
isolates cause and effect, conducts experiments
experimental condition
exposes participants to treatment
control condition
serves as comparison to see effects of treatment
random assignment
assigning random people to either experimental or control condition
independent variable
factor being manipulated and studied
