Q

Describe a feature of the Religious settlement
(Act of supremacy)

A

A feature of the religious settlement was the Act of Supremacy. This made Elizabeth supreme governor of the Church of England. This meant members of the clergy had to swear an oath of allegiance to the queen.

This was extremely clever because she wasn’t outrightly making herself the head of church, so no one could call her out for ignoring the Catholic’s pope as the head of church, while still having power as the governor.

Q

Describe a feature of the Religious settlement (act of uniformity)

A

A feature of the religious settlement was the Act of Uniformity. This introduced a set form of church service in the book of common prayer to be used in all churches. The clergy had to use the wording of the Prayer Book when conducting services. The wording was deliberately unclear.
Fine for not attending church on Sunday and religious days
