Why was drake needed ?

A

England finding it difficult to trade with Europe as the main trade route was through Spain occupied Netherlands. America offered new resources .

Drake was hired as a privateer. In panama he captured £40,000 of spanish silver, angering Phillip, but pleasing Elizabeth
In 1577, Elizabeth ordered Drake to bring back gold,silver and spices from the tip of south Africa. s He also gave Drake secret orders to attack Spanish colonies. If Spain were to attack England, they would need money and this would weaken Spanish colonies and make England richer

  • he gained a knighthood from Elizabeth.

The significance of Drake

A

The Golden Hind- Drake’s ship survived the voyage, but 4 did not. This did not matter as it increased England’s reputation as a seafaring power
Drake’s exhibitions colonised an area near San Francisco called Nova Albion. This increased trade and exploration to the new world where colonies were starting to be established
Trade was starting to be expanded to China, West Africa and India
There was a huge decline in relationships with Spain: Drake’s Voyage meant that England’s claim to most of North America, which brought England into conflict with the Pope. Spain had already conquered Mexico and Peru.

Spanish fury

A

Due to drake stealing gold the Spanish troops were unpaid and therefore sacked as they were after money . = known as Spanish fury

The Spanish fury united Dutch protestants and Catholics who made a treaty called the pacification of Ghent. Demanded Spanish troops to leave. Elizabeth sent 100,000 to Dutch rebels to help them fight. Don Juan arrived to sign the pacification of Ghent which meant Spain had lost.
