What is the function of the EPIDERMIS

A

Epidermis - (Epithelial Tissue)

  • Thin protective layer, epithelial tissue
  • Cells constantly undergoing cell division, producing millions of new cells.
  • No blood supply of its own

What is the function of the DERMIS

A

Dermis - (Connective Tissue)

  • Support and structure
  • Contains sweat glands, hair follicles, sebaceous glands and sensory receptors.
  • Rich nerve and blood supply (role in T regulation)
  • Cells include macrophages, WBC and mast cells.

What is the function of HYPODERMIS

A

Hypordermis- (Subcutaneous layer)

  • Essentially Adipose Tissue
  • Anchors skin to underlying organs
  • Serves as a ‘shock absorber’
  • Insulates (extreme temperature changes)
  • Stores and surplus nutrients
