Q

How did Mary and Pope Paul IV come into conflict?

A

Firstly, Pope Paul IV was anti-Spanish thus hostile to Mary’s husband which culminated in a war against Spain which Mary had to join on the Spanish side.

Additionally, Paul IV regarded the papal legate in England, Pole, as a heretic and had him dismissed but Mary refused to let him leave to face charges in Rome

Mary did not accept the new Legate, Peto, thus refused to acknowledge papal supremacy
