The Somatic And Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
What do they do
Modulate activity levels across organs and neurons
They do this by coupling to receptors on target
What are the endocrine glands
Collection of organs which secrete hormones into the blood stream
What regulates the secretion of the endocrine glands
Automatic nervous system
What do smooth muscles do
Change functional state of various organs to maintain bodily integrity
Give an example of smooth muscles
Muscles in intestine to push food out
Muscles in bladder to expel urine
What controls smooth muscles
Controlled by the automatic nervous system
How do smooth muscles work in the cardiac system
Smooth muscles in heart are regulated by automatic nervous system
Heart beat = involuntary
What controls the skeletal muscles
The somatic nervous system
And these are voluntary
Attached to skeleton by tendons or directly to bone
All have opposite group
What are the two categories of the nervous system
Central and peripheral
What does the central nervous system control
Brain and spinal cord
What does the peripheral nervous system control
All remaining nervous tissue in body
What does the somatic nervous system do
Connects external sensory organs through the brain to muscles
What does the automatic nervous system do
Connects the brain to the organs and glands
