The Structure Of The Heart Flashcards
What is the heart?
A muscular organ that pumps blood around the body.
Where is the heart located?
In the thoracic cavity behind the sternum.
What does the left pump deal with?
Oxygenated blood from the lungs.
What does the right pump deal with?
Deoxygenated blood from the body.
What are the two chambers of each pump?
Atrium
Ventricle
What is the atrium?
Thin-walled and elastic and stretches when it collects blood.
What is a ventricle?
This has a much thicker muscular wall that enables it to contract strongly to pump the blood some distance.
Why are two pumps need?
This is so that the pressure is always high enough to pump blood around the body or to the lungs.
Why does the right ventricle have thinner tissue?
It does not need to blood as far and low pressure is needed for the pulmonary capillaries.
Do both sides of the heart pump I time with each other?
Yes
Do both sides of the heart pump the same volume of blood?
Yes
What is the left atrioventricular valve also known as?
Bicuspid valve.
What is the right atrioventricular valve also known as?
Tricuspid valve.
Where do the ventricles pump blood into?
The arteries.
Where do the atria receive blood from?
The veins.
What are the vessels that connect the heart to the lungs known as?
Pulmonary vessels.
What is the aorta connected to?
The left ventricle.
What does the aorta carry?
Oxygenated blood.
Where does the aorta carry the oxygenated blood to?
To all parts of the body except the lugs.
Where is the vena cava connected to?
The right atrium.
What does the vena cava carry?
Deoxygenated blood.
Where does the vena cava carry the blood back from?
It carries it back from he tissues of the body except the lungs.
What is the pulmonary artery connected to?
The right ventricle.
What does the pulmonary artery carry?
Deoxygenated blood.
