A

Disunity between people who wanted war and those who didn’t. War Hawks. lack of volunteers. A draft is put into place. lose construction? Jefferson diminished the navy and army. Smaller ships. Three pronged attack ends up being a disaster.

A

Oliver hazard Perry builds a makeship fleet on lake Eerie. William Henry Harrison defeats Tecumseh at the Battle of the Thames, reviving moral.

France bows out in 1814

A

Ends their fighting in England. Thomas Macdonough defeats a large British force on lack Champlagne, saving new England. British land in the Chesapeake and attack Washington DC. They don’t lose though because we’re all fighting from different fronts. Battle of fort McHenry makes the star spangled banner. Andrew Jackson attacks Indian forces at the battle of Horseshoe bend in the west.

1815 A needless Battle- New Orleans and Andrew Jackson

A

British doesn’t want to fight anymore. War ended 2 weeks prior to New Orleans, but the word hadn’t gotten there. Jackson defends New Orleans. 2,000 are killed by Jackson and his troops, makes him a national hero. Credited with winning the war. Nationalism is revitalized.

A

US peace delegation meets in Belgium. Some people question the purpose of the war because nothing is really changed. Britain is weary of war because of money. Agree to return to pre-war boundaries. Nothing really changes. Impressment of American sailors and Indians getting supplied by forts is not addressed.

Hartford Convention 1814

A

New England merchants hurt by democratic republicans. Its been 7 years because of the embargo since they’ve been able to trade. Want to be compensated for the Embargo and want a 2/3 vote to place an embargo. They threaten to seceeded from the nation. New England federalists sound whiny and felt anti-patrioatic.

Took Britain on twice. Size, population, economy is growing. New Englanders are manufacturing.

A

Natives have no more patron to supply them weapons or to support them. Continued mass movement of US settlers filling in the western territories.

A national spirit develops

A

Shared common experience. First was the first great awakening, now it’s the battle of 1812. War gives everybody a sense of common identity. Seeing a spirit or culture develop. Washington Riving, and James Fennimore cooper, legend of sleepy hollow, the last of the Mohicans.

The American System- Henry Clay

A

USA must be economically independent. Can’t rely on other people. Need to be isolationist with the Neutrality proclamation. Focus on building up and growing America. Become economically powerful. Plan- Hamilton’s vision again-
1. Revive the National Bank, had a 20 year charter and expired since 1813.
2. Internal Improvements, Cumberland road, Erie Canal
3. Protective tariff, (tariff of 1816), put tariffs on other stuff to grow econ.
Opposed by James Madison for being unconstitutional/strict constructionism
