Define marriage in Christianity
The joining of a man and a woman to celebrate love, commitment and sex in the eyes of god and with gods blessing. Christians believes sex and marriage is a gift from god and marriage is a sacrament.
Other than spiritual, what benefit does marriage provide?
Marriage strengthens the legal side of a relationship. Both partners have rights should something go wrong. Spouses also become next of kin and have legal responsibility for each other.
What do Christians believe marriage celebrates, adds or highlights? (4)
- Celebrates the joy of sex.
- Highlights responsibility towards your partner- their needs above your own.
- Stresses importance of commitment- willingness to spend the rest of your life with someone.
- Adds a spiritual dimension- sexual relationship is not only physical but also spiritual and religious.

Divorce is allowed as a last resort however families should try to help the couple work through their problems first.
What is the process of getting divorced as a Muslim?
The husband must state before witnesses on three separate occasions that he wishes to divorce his wife.
What happens after a Muslim divorce
The couple live together for 3 months (IDDAH) but sleep separately in order to avoid any confusion as to who they father is of any child born after the divorce. The wife is given her dowry (MAHR).
How are a divorced Muslim couple expected to act.
The couple are expected to act with kindness and charity towards each other. Divorced Muslims should re-marry.

Roman Catholics believe divorce is unacceptable.

Does the Roman Catholic Church recognise divorce?
No, divorced people are still considered as married and therefore if they remarry it is considered adultery and they cannot receive the sacraments of bread and wine which is known as excommunication.

No, some Roman Catholic leaders argue that remarried couples shouldn’t have sex and should “live together like sister and brother”
What does the Church of England teach about divorce?
Divorce may be acceptable depending on circumstances and there should be a degree of forgiveness for those whose marriages fail.
What are the four conditions of the Church of England conducting a second marriage.
- Both partners must meet their obligations to partners or children from the first marriage.
- The marriage must not cause further hurt to children from the first marriage.
- The new relationship must not be the cause of the previous marriages break up.
- There must’ve been a good gap of time between the old version breaking up and the new marriage being prepared for.
Why does the Church of England permit remarriage?
Forgiveness and acceptance of others is seen as important. Jesus forgave the people that crucified him. It’s felt that the church should forgive and accept those whose marriages fail.
