Quakers believe it is acceptable in a loving relationship
Liberal Christians: Love is the supreme Christian principle, so as long as the couple are committed and truly love each other, nothing else matters

Liberal Christians allow it
Family may not be able to support a child
Sex for the purpose of love and pleasure - “Clothe yourselves with compassion” - Bible
Christianity - Purpose of marriage
Marriage was one of God’s gifts at creation
Catholics believe marriage is a sacrament, a lifelong union blessed by God
To share the pleasures of sex
Physical intimacy expresses love
Marriage is a spiritual bond of trust that reflects God’s love
To have children in a stable environment and raise them in the way God wants

Islam - Purpose of marriage
Marriage is the foundation of family life
Social contract that brings 2 families together and impacts the whole commmunity
Both partners keep their own rights as equals within the marriage under God
True sexual fulfilment
“There is no institution in Islam more beloved and deared [to God] than marriage” - Hadith
“A man completes half his religious responsibilities when he marries” - Hadith
Reason against cohabitation
Catholics and Muslims are against it as sex should only be in marriage
Reasons for cohabitation
Weddings are expensive
To trial the relationship to decide whether to marry or not (This is allowed by the Church of England)
Love is the only thing that matters according to Liberal Christians and Quakers
Reasons against divorce
Catholics believe marraige is a sacrament and so can never be broken, as binding promises are made to God and each other to be together till death (however, Catholics allow annulment, which is when the marriage is set aside as if it never happened)

Reasons supporting divorce

Divorce is discouraged by most Christians, but they also believe it can be done asd a last resort as it is sometimes the lesser of 2 evils
Muslims see divorce as a last resort, and the couple should work hard to fix their issues to avoid it
When divorcing, man states “I divorce you” 3 times in front of witnesses (woman says it if man refuses). Then he waits 3 months to ensure his wife isn’t pregnant, and to try and fix their issues
Remarriage is allowed after this 3 month period

Reasons against remarriage
Catholics do not recognise divorce so remarriage is not allowed (marriage after annulment is allowed as there is technically no first marriage)

Children must be brought up in faith: “Fathers, do not exasperate your children, instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” - Bible
