Theme C Part 1 Flashcards
What is Weather?
Day to Day condition of the atmosphere
What is Climate
Average weather condition of a place, measured over a long period(35 years)
Measurement Unit for Temperature
Degree Celcius
Instrument to measure Temperature
Digital Thermometer
Where is A thermometer Placed?
Stevenson’s Screen
What is the measurement unit of precipitation
Mm
Instruments used to measure precipitation
Rain Gauge
Where should you place Rain Gauge
Not near obstacles(trees/ buildings)
So it doesn’t stop rain or channel extra rain into the data
How does Rain Gauge Work
Rainfall is collected into the funnel and the collecting jar
Jar is emptied once a day
Is measured using measuring cylinder
Measuring instrument of Wind Speed
Anemometer
Measuring unit for Wind Speed
Km/h
How does Anemometer work
3 cups are mounted on a high ground which rotates as the wind blows. Wind speed is recorded on a dial and is displayed in km/h
Where is an anemometer placed
Attached to the top of the building
Measuring unit of Air Pressure
Millibars
Measuring instrument for air pressure
Barometer
Explain Barometer
It consists of an aneroid cell which contains a metal capsule with vacuum
As the air pressure increases the cell contracts
As the air pressure decreases the cell expands
This moves the dial and shows pressure in millibars
Where can barometers be placed
Anywhere
How does Wind vane work
The top section is loose and moves with wind while the base is fixed The arrow points to the direction where the wind is coming from
Where is Wind vane Located
Top of a Building
4 Types of Clouds
Cirrus
Cumulonimbus
Cumulus
Stratus
Characteristics of Stevenson Screen
1) Painted White( Reflect Sunlight)
2) Legs( Ensure it is in air and not ground)
3) Slates( air flow)
Why is weather forecasting not always accurate?
Due to the chaotic nature of our atmosphere, it is hard to give accurate long range forecast
Factors Affecting Climate
Latitude
Altitude
Prevailing Winds
Distance from the sea
How does latitude affect Climate
The sun’s rays to the equator travels a shorter distance and there is a smaller chance that is will be reflected by clouds.
However, the sun rays take a long time to reach places with a high latitude as it has to travel more distance
