why did dickens make it to be in the festive times
he wanted to popularise the emotional element to Christmas.
What does Dickens present the theme as
presenting the theme of family as one which embodies joy, strength and affection
Why is it intresting that scrooge was such an antithesis (oppostie) to Dickens idea about family embodying joy etc..
it could be argued that Scrooge begins the novella as the complete antithesis (direct opposite) to these ideas.
This introduces the idea that the absence of family may be one of the key factors which contributed to Scrooge’s initially abhorrent characterisation.
Freds affect on scroge in stave 1
generates a positive atmosphere affecting both Scrooge and the tone of narration.
Prior to his arrival Dickens focuses on cold, gloomy imagery.
Fred in the door = he “heated himself” and looked to be in “a glow”, introducing warmth to the stave

Large fam were common in the 19th cen, so dickens constructs them to be a relatable representation fo the lower class.
How does dickens convey the idea that poverty is not a barrier to happiness
Through the Cratchit fam on Christmas.
even the potatoes “knocked loudly…to be let out”, = joy and excitement of the fam
What shows that family is more important than family
when TT died, he had a loving funeral, which contrasts to Scrooges ‘unwatched, unwept, uncared for’ funeral

‘fathers much kinder than he used to be that home feels like heaven’
Scrooge feels upset when she died-negative effect on character
Belle
She states she has been replaced by a ‘golden’ idol-Scrooges ‘passion and pursuit for money.
This means thwta scrooges obsesstion for money has affceted is oppoturnity to kindle love and have a family.
He then sees Belle with her children and forces him to think what it would be like to have children - fam more imp than money.
