He has never been pushed away by anyone, he has cause his won self inflicted isolation.

This is a Biblical allusion as it alludes to the snake in the tree which tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden
Dickens could be saying isolation is deadly.

In the Victorian Era, it was part of their culture to greet people which shows how his behaviour is well known.

Scrooges uses the word ‘business’ to talk about a persons life showing how this lead to his isolation and greed.
