Faith
The virtue of believing in God as First Truth and believing in all those truths that God divinely reveals (i.e. the Articles of Faith)
Vices opposed to faith
Unbelief/voluntary doubt; heresy; apostasy; schism; blasphemy
Hope
The virtue by which we desire heaven as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength but on the grace of God
Vices opposed to hope
Despair; presumption
Charity
The virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God
Vices opposed to charity
Indifference; ingratitude; lukewarmness; sloth; hatred/pride
Nonvoluntary actions
Actions that we do not will (digesting, breathing, etc.)
Voluntary actions
Actions for which we have full responsibility
Involuntary actions
Actions that are against the will
Freedom of indifference
The view that we can only choose freedom (hell) or not choose freedom (heaven)
Freedom for excellence
The ability to do good
Conscience—2 principles to follow
- Must always follow your conscience
- Moral duty to form your conscience
Virtue
A habitual and stable disposition to do the good, which makes its possessor good
Prudence

Giving what is due
Fortitude
Standing firmly in the good in the midst of trials
Temperance
Moderation of desires and pleasures
Sin
A thought, action, or passion contrary to right reason and the eternal law of God, which fails in the love of God and neighbor due to a disordered attachment to lesser goods, which wounds one’s nature
Sins of omission
When you have a moral duty to do something and choose not to do it
Sins of commission
Doing something sinful (murder, lying, etc.)
Conditions for mortal sin
Grave matter, full knowledge, deliberate consent
Law
A dictate of practical reason ordered to the common good and properly promulgated by a legitimate authority

A community of a higher order must not usurp the tasks of a community of a lower order and thereby deprive it of its authority
