THEORIES AND PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH ETHICS Flashcards
(26 cards)
is based on the standards of right and WRONG that prescribe what humans should do, USUALLY in terms of rights, obligations, benefits TO society, fairness, or specific virtues.
ETHICS
WHAT ARE THE 6 FACTORS AFFECT HOW WE FIND ANSWERS?
RELIGIONS
INTUITIVE FEELINGS
CULTURAL NORMS
LAWS AND POLICIES
PROFESSIONAL CODES OF CONDUCT
COERCION
makes claims about cosmology,
social behavior, and the “proper” treatment OF others, etc. Ethics are based on logic and
reason rather than tradition
RELIGIONS
sense of knowing what the
right answer or decision is before you make it.
It’s a deep, internal, visceral feeling. You know
your intuition is around when you say things
like, “I can’t really explain it, but…” or “It just felt
right” or, more likely, “It just felt wrong.”
INTUITIVE FEELINGS
the standards we live by.
They are the shared expectations and rules
that guide behavior of people within social
groups. Cultural norms are learned and
reinforced from parents, friends, teachers and
others while growing up in a society
CULTURAL NORMS
laws carry with them A punishment for violations, ethics do not
LAWS AND POLICIES
A professional code of conduct is a document
that explains to employees how they are
expected to act on behalf of their company
PROFESSIONAL CODES OF CONDUCT
the practice of PERSUADING someone to do something by using force or
threats.
COERCION
The applied discipline that addresses the moral
features of nursing practice, It is a subset of health
care ethics or bioethics.
NURSING ETHICS
WHAT ARE THE 3 DIMENSIONS OF NURSING ETHICS:
prescribe ethical norms
describe ethical aspects of nursing
generate ethical guidance
an ethical theory that says actions are good or bad
according to a clear set of rules. Its name comes
from the Greek word deon, meaning duty. Actions
that align with these rules are ethical, while actions
that don’t aren’t.
DEONTOLOGY
WHAT ETHICAL THEORIES IS THIS EXAMPLE:
Example:
Telling the truth may cause happiness or upset but
is considered the right thing to do.
DEONTOLOGY
comes from the teleological ethical theory.
(telos= end/ logos=reason)
If the outcomes of an action are considered to
be positive, or to give rise to benefits, then that
action is held to be morally right.
the moral rightness or wrongness of an act, is
entirely a function of the consequences, or the
results of that act.
refers to what is the goal, aims and
purposes is/are
CONSEQUENTIALISM/ TEOLISM
WHAT TYPE OF ETHICAL THEORIES IS THIS EXAMPLE:
Example:
a teleological explanation of why forks have prongs
is that this design helps humans eat certain foods;
stabbing food to help humans eat is what forks are
for.
CONSEQUENTIALISM/ TELEOLISM
rests on the idea that it is the consequences or
results of actions, laws, policies, etc. that
determine whether they are good or bad, right
or wrong.
We should choose the one that will produce the
best overall results.
CONSEQUENTIALISM/UTILITARIANISM
WHAT TYPE OF ETHICAL THEORIES IS THIS EXAMPLE?
Example:
For instance, most people would agree that lying is
wrong. But if telling a lie would help save a person’s
life, consequentialism says it’s the right thing to do.
Utilitarianism judges consequences by a “greatest
good for the greatest number” standard.
CONSEQUENTIALISM/ UTILITARIANISM
Mainly deals with the honesty and morality of a
person. It states that practicing good habits
such as honesty, generosity makes a moral
and virtuous person.
It looks at the virtue or moral character of the
person carrying out an action, rather than AT ethical duties and rules, or the consequences
of particular actions.
VIRTUE ETHICS
is
therefore concerned with the character of
individual nurses and seeks ways to enable
nurses to develop character traits appropriate
for actions that enhance wellbeing.
