Theories of Learning Flashcards
What is the Cognitive Learning Theory?
The Learning Theory where the performer is given the whole task, before using past experience to identify and overcome the intervening variables.
What is Operant Conditioning?
The Learning theory where the consequences which follow the response determine whether behaviour will be repeated or not.
What is Bandura’s Theory of Observational Learning?
The Learning Theory where a demonstration is provided and the performer learns by watching and copying someone else who performs the skill. Bandura tested this with the Doll experiment.
What is Positive Reinforcement?
When the stimulus is given when the correct response occurs. For example, applauding a badminton player when they make a successful overhead clear.
What is Negative Reinforcement?
When the stimulus is withdrawn when the desired response occurs. For example, removing any feedback when a tennis player correctly performs the serve.
What is Punishment?
When the stimulus is given to prevent the response occurring. For example, criticism when the performer does the incorrect response.
What is an S-R Bond?
The bond between a Stimulus and the Reponses. A performer senses a stimulus and that promotes a response.
What is The Law of Exercise?
Thorndike’s Law that states that the more often a response is repeated and reinforced, the stronger the S+R bond will become
What is the Law of Effect?
Thorndike’s Law that states that positive reinforcement increases the likelihood of the behaviour recurring- the performer needs a satisfier after completing the skill correctly to know what it feels like
What is the Law of Readiness?
Thorndike’s Law that states that learning by connection can only take place when the nervous system has reached an appropriate stage of maturation
What does DARMMM stand for?
Demonstration, Attention, Retention, Motor Reproduction, Motivation, Matching Performance
