Theory, Sampling, And Data Generation Flashcards
Where is theory used in quantitative and where in qualitative
Upfront
Upfront, backend, or never
What are ways theory is used
Theoretical perspective, explanatory/interpretive, theory generation, not used explicitly
Theoretical perspective (use of theory)
Theory is overall lens to guide the study
- shapes questions asked, data collection, data analysis, etc.
Explanatory/interpretive (theory)
- theory used to interpret research findings
- usually interwoven with focus on ways it can be used to interpret results or woven within research explanation or results
Theory generation
Inductive process of building a theory or model from the data
Important things to consider in sampling
- number of participants
- access to participants
- rapport with participants
- flexibility in sampling
Number of participants is based on what
Scope of study, nature of topic, quality of data, number of interviews per participants, study design
Basic types of collection procedures
Interviews, observations, documents, visual and digital data
Types of Interviews
Structured, semi-structured, unstructured
One on one, focus group, talking circle
Face-to face, telephone, virtual/remote
Interview summary
Start with grand tour question
- follow up with probes
What should interview discussions be like
Open ended
Clear and singular
Centered on understanding your central phenomenon
Researcher role changes
Complete participant -> participant as observer (people know you’re participating but you’re observing) -> observer as participant (aware but not participating) -> complete observer (no one aware of presence)
