Explain the structure and function of the temporomandibular joint

A
  • Synovial joint which has an intracapsular disc,
  • allows retraction, protraction, elevation and depression of the mandible and side to side translation,
  • capable of fine and forceful movement,
  • Muscles that move the joint include the medial and lateral pterygoids, the temproalis and masseter. These are innervated by the same cranial nerve the trigeminal nerve.
