thermal energy Flashcards
(11 cards)
Thermal energy
energy possessed by a system due to its temperature
temperature
the measurement of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a system
Brass or steel cools faster?
Brass
Conduction
transfer of thermal energy through a medium without the physical movement of the medium itself.
how does conduction work?
When one part of the object is heated, particles at the heated end begin to move more vigorously.
They then collide with the particles beside them to transfer energy and make them move faster.
This process continues until the energy is passed down to the cooler end of the object and all the particles move faster and more vigorously.
Why do metal conduct thermal energy better than most non-metals?
Metals have free electrons to help transfer energy quickly.
Convection
transfer of thermal energy due to the movement of the medium, arising from density differences in the medium.
how convection works? heating
When the liquid/gas is heated at the bottom, it expands to become less dense and rises to the top.
Cooler liquid/gas at the top is denser so it sinks to replaces it.
This process continues to set up a convection current to heat up all the liquid/gas
how does convection work? Cooling ver
When the liquid/gas is cooled at the top, it contracts to become denser and sinks to the bottom.
Warmer liquid/gas at the bottom is less dense so it rises up to be cooled.
This process continues to set up a convection current to cool down all the liquid/gas
Radiation
transfer of thermal energy in the form of infrared radiation without the need of a medium.
What affects radiation?
- nature of the surface
- surface area of the object
- Surface temperature pf the object.
