Thoracic and rib Flashcards
(29 cards)
How are the thoracic vertebrae positioned? (What kind of wedge?)
Anterior wedge/ smaller in front creating kyphosis
The SP of T1-T3 are found where in relation to TP?
same level as TP
The SP of T4-T6 are found where in relation to TP?
half a level lower
The SP of T7-T9 are found where in relation to TP?
1 level lower
If you want to find the TP for T8 and you’re currently on the SP, what do you need to do?
Move up one level
Where is the sternal notch in relation to the thoracic spine and ribs?
T2/T3
Where is the xiphoid process in relation to the thoracic spine and ribs?
T9/T10
What ribs are true ribs?
What ribs are false ribs?
What ribs are floating ribs?
1-7
8-10
11-12
What ribs are atypical due to only attaching to one facet instead of 2
1 10 11 and 12
(Every number with a 1 in it)
Why is the second rib atypical?
It attaches to anteriorly to the junction between the sternum and the manubrium
Describe the upper thoracic rib joints?
What about the lower thoracic rib joints?
Convex TP on Concave rib
Planar joint
The upper ribs have what motion?
What plane does this happen in?
Frontal plane - pump handle
The lower ribs have what motion?
What plane does this happen in?
Sagittal plane- bucket handle
What angle is the normal thoracic kyphosis?
40 degrees
What is the normal infrasternal angle?
90-100
If you have an infrasternal angle over 100, what is tight?
What is long?
Tight internal oblique
long external oblique
if you have an infrasternal angle under 90, what is tight?
what is long?
Tight external oblique
long internal oblique
People with an infrasternal angle under 90 have more expansion in ___________ and need to work on breathing in ________ positions
more anterior expansion
work on breathing in prone or quadruped
People with an infrasternal angle over 100 have more expansion in _____________ and need to work on breathing in ___________ positions
posterior direction
supine positions
How much ribcage expansion is normal with max inhalation
5cm-10cm
If you elevate your arms, how does this affect rib expansion
expansion measurement will decrease to the lower end of the range because you’re pre-opening the ribs by raising your arms
What is implicated if the subcostal margin does not expand with arms raised inhalation
short external obliques
Bilateral shoulder elevation is coupled with what thoracic motion
extension
unilateral shoulder elevation is paired with what thoracic motion
ipsilateral rotation and flexion
