Q

what are the functions of thyroxin ?

A
  1. increases the basal metabolic rate (and body heat production) in all body cells
  2. does this by controlling the rate or cellular respiration
  3. promotes functioning of the heart
  4. promotes normal functioning of nervous system
  5. increases nervous activity + sharpens alertness/reflexes

16
Q

how is the thyroxin level in blood kept constant ?

A

negative feedback

thyroid/pituitary glands act accordingly

17
Q

how does negative feedback work with thyroxin?

A

the pituitary detects a decreased level of thyroxin in blood
> secretes more TSH

the TSH stimulates the thyroid to secrete more thyroxin (return levels to normal)

the higher the level of thyroxin
> further secretion of THS from pituitary

negative feedback ensures the level of thyroxin in blood is kept at correct level at all times
