Tissue And Organs Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the definition of a tissue?
Composed of groups of cells that carry out the same function
What is an organ composed of
Several different types of tissue
What is an organ
A structural unit that carries out one of more functions
What is a leaf
An organ highly specialised for photosynthesis
What tissue does a leaf contain
Palisade, vascular, epidermal and spongy mesophyll tissue
What is the ileum
Human organ, alimentary canal that’s part of the digestive system
What is the role of the ileum
Absorption of digested food and movement of undigested food through the colon
Where does the ileum run from
Long tube that runs from mouth to anus
What are all organs
Modifications of the same basic 5 layered structure
What is the serosa
The outer layer of connective tissue that provides thin, protective lining for the alimentary canal that’s part
What is the muscularis externa
Consists of an outer layer of longitudinal muscle that runs along the alimentary canal
Inner layer of circular muscle that runs around the alimentary canal
Contractions of longitudinal muscle cause pendular movement
Contractions of circular muscle cause local constrictions which push food along the gut in peristatic waves
What is the Submucosa
Largely composed of connective tissue and contains many blood vessels and lymphatic vessels
What are lymphatic vessels important for
Transporting absorbed food products
What is Muscularis mucosa
Thin layer of muscle lies between the submucosa and the mucosa
It’s important in moving the villi that are present in the mucosa which increases the contact with digested food in the gut lumen
The small strands of muscle extended from the main muscularis mucosa layer up through the mucosa and into the villi
Contraction of these help produce characteristic waiting movement of the villi
What is the Mucosa
A layer in contact with the food in the gut lumen
It is highly specialised with substantially increased surface area due to presence of villi and microvilli
