Tissue Chapter 4 Flashcards
(110 cards)
What are the four basic types of tissues
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscle
- Neural
What is the study of tissues
Histology
What are the two divisions of epithelial tissue
- Epithelia
2. Glands
What is epithelia
Avascular layers that cover exposed surfaces
What is the difference between an exocrine and endocrine gland
Exocrine glands secrete onto external surfaces or ducts
Endocrine glands secrete into interstitial fluid
What are the 4 functions of epithelial tissue
- Physical protection
- Control permeability
- Sensation
- Specialized secretions
What is neuroepithelium
Sensory epithelium found in special sense organs
What is the apical surface
Surface that faces exterior body or internal space
What is the base surface
Attaches to underlying tissues
What is the name for the lateral surfaces attached to neighbouring cells and the basal surfaces
Basolateral surface
What is polarity referred to as in epithelial tissue
Structural differences between exposed and attached surfaces
What is the name for an apical surface exposed to space inside the tube
Lumen
What are the three basic epithelial cell shapes
- Squamous
- Cuboidal
- Columnar
What is the difference between simple epithelium and stratified
Simple is a single layer
Stratified is several layers
Where is stratified epithelium usually found
Areas the need protection from chemical stress
Mouth/surface of skin
What is an occluding junction
A barrier that isolates the basho lateral surface from contents of lumen
What is an adhesion belt
Strengthens the apical region and prevents leakage from occluding junctions
What is a gap junction
Allows chemical communication between cells . Helps coordinate specific functions
What is a connexon
The area of a gap junction where two cells are held together by interlocking proteins
What are desmosomes
Firm attachments between cells cytoskeletons
What are cell adhesion molecules (CAMs)
Membrane proteins from different cells that bind together
What are hemidesmosomes
Attach deepest epithelial cells to basement membrane
What is the basal lamina and what is it composed of
Complex structure produced by the basal surface
It is composed of a clear and dense layer
What are the clear/dense layers composed of
Clear layer is composed of protein filaments
Dense is composed of coarse protein fibers; restricts diffusion
