Tissues Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is myelin?
Myelin is a fatty substance that forms a protective sheath around the axons of neurones.
What are the components of nervous tissue?
The components of nervous tissue are neurones and glia.
What are neurones?
Neurones are nerve cells responsible for transmitting signals.
What are glia?
Glia are supporting cells that outnumber neurones by approximately 10:1.
What are the connective tissue coats for the CNS?
The connective tissue coat for the CNS is the meninges.
What are the connective tissue coats for the PNS?
The connective tissue coat for the PNS is the epineurium.
What are the types of glial cells?
The types of glial cells include astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, and Schwann cells.
What is the function of astrocytes?
Astrocytes support neurones, assist in ion transport, and induce the blood-brain barrier.
What is the function of oligodendrocytes?
Oligodendrocytes produce myelin in the brain and spinal cord.
What is the function of microglia?
Microglia provide immune surveillance for the CNS.
What is the function of Schwann cells?
Schwann cells produce myelin and support axons in the PNS.
