Tissues of the Body Flashcards
(10 cards)
Exocrine
Glands with ducts
Gland
Epithelial cell or collection of cells specialised for secretion
Endocrine
Ductless glands
Secrete into the blood stream
How to classify glads
Four methods
Destination of secretion
Structure of gland
Nature of secretion
Method of secretion
Destination
Exocrine – ducts to epithelial tissue
Endocrine – into blood stream
Structure of gland
1 – secretory part
- — unicellular or multicellular
- — acinar (grape shape) or tubular
- — coiled or branched
2 – duct system
- – simple gland (single duct)
- — complex gland (branched duct)
Branching ducts
Main > interlobular > intralobular > intercalary
Nature of secretion
1 – mucous glands
- – secrete mucus
- – rich in mucins
- – stain poorly
2 – serous glands
- – secrete watery enzymes
- eosinphillic (pink)
Method of secretion
Merocrine
Apocrine
Holocrine
Merocrine
Basically exocytosis
1- membrane bound component approaches cell surface
2- fuses with plasma membrane
3- contents and in continuity with extra cellular space
4- membrane is achieved to maintain surface area
Apocrine
Has to get membrane from the plasma membrane
1- non-membrane bound structure approaches cell surface
2- makes contact and pushes up apical membrane
3- thin layer of apical cytoplasm drapes around droplet
4- membrane pinches off from cell
5- membrane replaced from cell
