TMD Flashcards
(32 cards)
what is TMD
refers to a collection of medical and dental conditions affecting TMJ and/or muscles of mastication, as well as contiguous tissue compromise
depression/opening ROM
40-50 mm, 3 adult knuckles
how wide does the mouth need to open for mastication
18 mm
protrusion ROM
6-9 mm
retrusion ROM
3 mm beyond neutral
lateral deviation
8-11 mm
protrusion movement
anterior and inferior translation
retrusion movement
posterior/superior translation
roll/slide relationship when opening the mouth
roll posterior slide anterior
roll/slide relationship when closing the mouth
roll anterior slide posterior
when does rolling occur during opening of the mouth
early phase- 35-50%
bilateral contraction of masseter action
elevate/close and protrude
unilateral contraction of the masseter
ipsilateral excursion
bilateral contraction of temporalis
elevation/closing and retrude
unilateral contraction of temporalis
ipsilateral excursion
medial pterygoid bilateral contraction
elevates and protrudes
unilateral contraction of medial pterygoid
contralateral excursion
lateral pterygoid bilateral contraction
strong protrusion and depression
lateral pterygoid unilateral contraction
contralateral excursion
opening of the mouth is primarily driven by…
inferior head of lateral pterygoid and suprahyoid
closing of the mouth is driven by….
masseter, medial pterygoid, and temporalis
TMD signs and symptoms
popping
reduced bite force
reduced ROM
headaches
tinnitus
trigger points
capsular fibrosis
adhesions form due to inflammation. hypomobile joint
classic triad of TMD
- pain in muscles of mastication, pretragel area, and/or TMJ
- limited and/or asymmetric movement with opening and closing
- joint sounds: clicking, popping, and crepitus
