Topic 1 Flashcards
Matter on the move (20 cards)
What is matter?
-Everything is made up of matter.
-Matter is a physical substance that has mass and takes up space
-Matter is made up of particles
What is particle?
Particles are made of atoms that are bonded together into molecules
Difference between Atom and Molecule?
Atoms are made out of protons, neutrons and electrons and molecules is a group of atoms bonded together
What are the three states of matter?
The three states of matter is Liquid, Solid and Gas.
What is a solid?
The state of matter of a substance that has a definite shape and volume.
What is a Liquid?
The state of matter of a substance that has a definite volume, but no definite shape.
What is a gas?
The state of matter of the substance that has neither a definite shape nor a definite volume.
What is density?
Density is the amount of mass a substance has per volume of that substance.
What the density of the three states of matter
Solids have high density
Liquids have less density
Gases have low density
What is a fluid?
A fluid is a substance that is either a liquid or a gas that can flow.
Fluids take the shape of their container because they flow and spread out easily.
Examples of fluids?
Water is a fluid (liquid)
Helium is a fluid (Gas)
Solids are not fluids
5 important thing about the Particle Model of Matter
All substances are made up of tiny particles
All particles in pure substances are the same (different pure substances are made of different particles)
The particles are always in motion
The particles have space between them
The particles in a substance are attracted to one another. The attractive force depends on the type of particle.
What is Liquid to Solid called?
Freezing
What is Solid to Liquid called?
Melting
What is Liquid to Gas called?
Vaporizing (fast)
Evaporating (slow)
What is Gas to Liquid called?
Condensation
What is Solid to Gas called?
Sublimation
What is Gas to Solid called?
Deposition
What is the Boiling Point
Boiling Point: The temperature that a substance
changes from a liquid to a gas.

What is the Freezing Point?
Freezing Point: The temperature that a substance
changes from a liquid to a solid
