What was the Duma?

A

A parliament of two houses, one from the people and one from the nobles of the Tsar. They allowed trade unions and political parties to meet.

Did the Tsar keep to the Duma?

A

He did not keep to the Duma. He changed the voting system, so only those who agreed with him were elected. He stopped calling the Duma at all over time. By 1907 the Okrana openly broke up political parties.

Some worked in exile, some met secretly, but the Petrograd Soviet stopped meeting in 1905.

Stunning defeat from the Germans in Tannenberg. Of the 150k starting, 92k were captured and 30k were killed.

Growing unrest after war- Key Dates

A

23rd February- International Women’s day. Strike for equal rights. Then about bread shortages etc.

24th Feb- 150,000 took to the streets. Armed with metal tools and bars- mass protest against Brad shortages and the country Tsar. Army and police were helpless

25th February- 200,000 took to streets. ‘Down with the Tsar.’ Tsar commanded to take the protestors down.

26th February- soliders refused to fire. Tsar did not have the army.

27th- Shot down commander officer.

27-28th- Released political prisoners.
