MIXTURES AND CHROMATOGRAPHY:
TRUE OR FALSE: There are no chemical bonds between the different parts of a mixture?
TRUE
MIXTURES AND CHROMATOGRAPHY:
What 2 things can the parts of a mixture be?
elements or compounds
MIXTURES AND CHROMATOGRAPHY:
Name 5 physical methods that can be used to separate the different pars of a mixture
- filtration
- crystallisation
- simple distillation
- fractional distillation
- chromatography
MIXTURES AND CHROMATOGRAPHY:
What is a physical method?
a method that doesn’t involve a chemical reaction, so doesn’t form any new substances
MIXTURES AND CHROMATOGRAPHY:
What substances is air mainly made of?
How easily can these be separated?
- air is a mixture of gases
- mainly nitrogen, argon, oxygen and carbon dioxide
(the gases can be separated out fairly easily)
MIXTURES AND CHROMATOGRAPHY:
What is crude oil a mixture of?
different length hydrocarbon molecules
MIXTURES AND CHROMATOGRAPHY:
What are the basic properties of a mixture?
a mixture of the properties of the separate parts
(the chemical properties of a substance aren’t affected by it being a part of a mixture)
MIXTURES AND CHROMATOGRAPHY:
What would be the properties of a mixture of iron powder and sulfur powder?
- they will show the properties of both the iron and suphur
- it would contain grey magnetic bits of iron and bright yellow bits of sulfur
