Topic 1 - Cell Biology Flashcards
(32 cards)
What is a Eukaryotic cell?
More complex cells such as animal and plant cells
What is a Prokaryotic cell?
A simpler, smaller cell such as bacteria
Where is a nucleus found?
In an animal cell
What is the nucleus’ job?
It contains genetic material that controls the activity of the cell
Where is cytoplasm found?
In an animal cell
What is cytoplasms job?
It is where chemical reactions occur in the cell, it contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions
Where is a cell membrane found?
The outside of an animal cell
What is the cell membranes job?
Holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out
Where is mitochondria found?
Inside and animal cell
What is the job of mitochondria?
It is where most of the aerobic respiration reactions take place
Where are ribosomes found?
Inside and animal cell
What’s the job of a ribosome?
These are where proteins are made in a cell
Where is a cell wall found?
The outside of a plant cell
What is the cell walls job?
It supports the plant cell and strengthens it
Where is a vacuole found?
Inside a plant cell
What is the job of a vacuole?
Keeps the cell strong and contains a weak solution of sugars and salts
Where is chloroplast found?
Inside a plant cell
What is the job of chloroplast?
This is where photosynthesis occurs in a plant cell
Where is chlorophyll found?
Inside chloroplast in the plant cell
What is the job of chlorophyll?
Absorbs light needed for photosynthesis
What is the formula for magnification?
Magnification=image size/real size
What is differentiation?
The process when a cell changes to become specialised for its job
Example of a specialised cell?
Sperm cell - specialised for reproduction
- long tail and streamline head
- lots of mitochondria for energy
What are chromosomes?
They contain genetic information and are found in the nucleus of each cell
They are coiled up lengths of DNA molecules
