topic 1 - energy Flashcards
(13 cards)
what are the 8 energy stores?
thermal, kinetic, gravitational potential energy, elastic potential energy, chemical, magnetic, electrostatic, nuclear
what is a system
a single or group of objects your interested in
what happens when a system changes?
energy is transferred into or away from the system and different stores.
what is work done?
energy transferred e.g a current working against resistance in a circuit
whats a moment?
a moment is energy in an energy in an objects kinetic energy store
what happens to energy in kinetic store when an objects speeding up
it incrrases. the energy also depends on the mass of the object
when is there energy in GPE store
when an object is raised
what else does GPE energy get affected by
mass of object
when is energy added to elastic potential energy
when an object is stretched or squashed
what is meant by specific heat capacity
the amount of energy needed to heat 1 kg of material by 1 degrees celcius
what happens when a material can store alot of thermal energy nefore warming
transfer lots of energy when cooling down
specific heat capacity practical
- use a solid blocks with holes for the heater and thermometer. measure blocks mass and insulate. insert heater and thermometer
- measure initial temp. connect circuit to 10V power supply, turn on power and start stopwatch.
- record temperature at regular intervals
- after 10 readings turn off power supply
- calculate power supplied using P= voltage x current
determine energy transferred using E= Pt - repeat and compare
