What is psychology?
The scientific study of behaviour and cognitive processes.
What is the difference between behaviour and cognition?
Behaviour is any observable action; cognition refers to internal mental processes like thoughts and feelings.
How do you become a registered psychologist in Victoria?
Complete 6 years of study including a 4-year psychology degree and 2 years of supervised training or postgraduate study.
What is the role of the Psychologists Registration Board of Victoria?
To ensure psychologists meet professional standards and follow the Code of Behaviour.
What are the three principles in the Code of Behaviour?
Competence, privacy & confidentiality, and propriety.
List three areas of psychological specialisation.
Clinical, forensic, and neuropsychology.
What makes psychology a science?
It uses the scientific method involving hypothesis testing, controlled variables, and empirical evidence.
What is a hypothesis?
A testable prediction about the relationship between two or more variables.
What is the independent variable (IV)?
The variable that is manipulated.
What is the dependent variable (DV)?
The variable that is measured.
What is the difference between a sample and a population?
A population is the larger group of interest; a sample is a smaller group selected from it.
What is random sampling?
A method where every individual has an equal chance of being selected.
What are extraneous variables?
Variables other than the IV that might influence the DV.
List the types of data in psychology.
Qualitative, quantitative, subjective, objective.
What are between groups and within groups designs?
Between groups compares different groups; within groups compares the same group under different conditions.
