What is mental health?
A state of wellbeing in which an individual realises their abilities and can cope with life stresses.
What is a mental illness?
A diagnosed condition that affects thinking, emotional state or behaviour.
Where do mental health and illness lie?
On a continuum from healthy to illness.
What is the role of a clinical psychologist?
To assess, diagnose and treat mental disorders using therapy.
What is the biopsychosocial model?
A holistic model that considers biological, psychological, and social factors.
Give an example of a biological factor.
Genetics or neurotransmitter imbalances.
Give an example of a psychological factor.
Cognitive patterns such as negative thinking.
Give an example of a social factor.
Support systems or life events.
What is a fixed mindset?
The belief that abilities are static and cannot change.
What is a growth mindset?
The belief that abilities can improve with effort and learning.
What is stigma?
A negative label that causes discrimination.
What is a self-fulfilling prophecy?
When a belief or label causes someone to act in a way that makes the belief come true.
What is the DSM-5?
A manual used to diagnose mental disorders.
List 3 mood disorders.
Major depression, bipolar disorder, dysthymia.
List 3 anxiety disorders.
GAD, panic disorder, phobias.
List 1 psychotic disorder and a symptom.
Schizophrenia; delusions or hallucinations.
What is the 4P factor model?
Predisposing, Precipitating, Perpetuating, Protective factors.
What is positive psychology?
The study of strengths and virtues that help individuals and communities thrive.
What does PERMA stand for?
Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement.
What is toxic positivity?
The pressure to stay positive at all times, even in hardship.
