Topic 1: Microbiology Flashcards
(38 cards)
What is the definition of a micro-organism?
An organism of microscopic size. These organisms can not be seen by the naked eye. Examples include virus, bacteria and fungi.
What is the definition of a pathogen?
Any type of microorganism which can cause infection or disease in its host.
What is the definition of an infection?
An infection occurs when viruses, bacteria, or other microbes enter your body and begin to multiply.
What is the definition of a disease?
A disease is a condition that deteriorates the normal functioning of the cells, tissues and organs, that are characterised by their signs and symptoms.
What is the definition of a (medical) sign?
A (medical) sign is a physical response linked to a medical fact or characteristic that is detected by a physician, nurse, or medical device during examination of a patient.
What is the definition of a symptom?
A symptom is a manifestation of disease apparent to the patient themselves.
What is the definition of virulence?
Virulence is the severity or harmfulness of a disease or poison.
What is the definition of bacteremia?
Bacteremia is the presence of bacteria in the blood stream.
What is the definition of viremia?
Viremia is the presence of virus in the blood stream.
What is the definition of aerobic?
An organism which may survive in the presence of oxygen or free air.
What is the definition of obligate aerobes?
An organism that requires only oxygen to grow and survive.
What is the definition of facultative aerobes?
An organism that can survive in the absence of oxygen.
What is the definition of anaerobic?
An organism which can survive in the absence of oxygen or free air.
What is the definition of obligated anaerobes?
The organism that can grow and survive only in the absence of oxygen.
What is the definition of facultative anaerobes?
The organism which can survive in both oxygenated as well as the deoxygenated environment.
What is the definition of motile?
Motile is the ability of an organism to move independently.
What is the definition of non-motile?
Non-motile is the inability to move by itself.
What is the definition of mesophilic?
An organism that grows best in moderate temperature, neither too hot nor too cold (20-45 degree Celsius)
What is the definition of thermophilic?
An organism that grows best at higher temperature (55-65, maximum 80 degree Celsius).
What is the definition of capnophilic?
Capnophiles are microorganisms that grows in the presence of high concentration of carbon dioxide (5-10% CO2)
What is the definition of Halophilic?
Halophiles are microorganisms that requires certain concentration of salt to survive.
What is the definition of Commensal Bacteria?
Types of microbes that reside on either surface of the body or at mucosa without harming human health.
What is the definition of Opportunistic pathogens?
Some commensals or saprophytes can produce disease, when a host is immunocompromised.
What is the definition of antibiotic?
Antibiotics are medicines that fight bacterial infections in humans and animals. They work by killing the bacteria or by making it hard for the bacteria to grow and multiply.
