Topic 13 - Chemical Analysis Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the name of the type of analysis which just identifies that a particular chemical is present?
Qualitative
What is the name of the type of analysis which determines the quantity of a particular chemical present?
Quantitative
Describe how a flame test could be carried out.
Dip a wire loop in some water to dampen it, place it into the solid to be tested and place into a Bunsen Flame.
What information can be obtained from doing a flame test?
The metal ion that is present based on the colour of the flame
Is flame testing qualitative or quantitative analysis?
Qualitative
What is the name given to the type of reaction that can be used to determine the presence of chloride ions?
Precipitation
What experimental method could be used to do a quantitative analysis of an acid or an alkali?
Titration
How would you test for a metal carbonate?
Add the metal carbonate to acid, observe fizzing. If the gas is collected this can be tested using limewater which will turn cloudy/milky as carbon dioxide is produced.
Describe the test for oxygen.
Place a glowing splint into the test tube and if oxygen is present the splint will relight.
Describe the test for hydrogen.
Place a lit splint into the test tube and if hydrogen is present a ‘squeaky pop’ will be heard.
Describe the test for carbon dioxide.
Add some limewater to the test tube and if carbon dioxide is present, the limewater will turn cloudy/milky.
Fill in the blank: The type of analysis that identifies the presence of a chemical is called _______.
Qualitative
Fill in the blank: The method used to determine the quantity of a chemical is called _______.
Quantitative
What process is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid?
Filtration
