What is sectionalism?
The differences between a section and a region and their similarities that lead to growing loyalty towards their own region or section.
What was the Missouri Compromise?
The Missouri Compromise was an agreement in 1820 that admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. The land got split up through the 36,30 line. South of the line is Arkansas territory.
How did the Missouri Compromise lead to growing sectionalism?
The compromise didn’t please many people. The North viewed congressman, who voted Missouri to be accepted as a slave state as a traitor while the South disliked the ban on slavery in territories that could become a state.
What was the Compromise of 1850?
The Compromise of 1850, set up by Henry Clay, happened because California wanted to be admitted as a free state. It also admitted New Mexico and Utah territories to decide whether they wanted slavery through popular sovereignty.
Why couldn’t the Missouri Compromise be used instead of the Compromise of 1850?
The Missouri Compromise only pertained to the Louisiana Purchase.
When and what was the Dred Scott decision?
It happened in 1857. It was a court case that went to the Supreme Court and ruled that African Americans were property.
How did the Dred Scott decision affect African American rights?
The decision basically removed every restriction on slavery. Slaves could be taken anywhere and could be used anywhere.
How did the Dred Scott decision affect the people’s view on slavery?
It enraged many abolitionists and made the headlines drawing more attention towards the issue of slavery.
When was Uncle Tom’s Cabin published and what was it?
It was a novel published by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852 that dramatized the horrors of slavery.
What was the affect of Uncle Tom’s Cabin’s on people?
It opened their eyes to how bad slavery was and rallied people to take up the cause of abolition. However, the novel enraged many Southerners.
When did Bleeding-Kansas happen and what caused it?
Bleeding-Kansas happened in 1856 as a result of Stephen Douglas’ Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. The act was made so a railroad could be made in Illinois, but to convince the South to approve it he added a clause which allowed the Kansas and Nebraska territories to make decisions about slavery through popular sovereignty.
How did Bleeding-Kansas lead to greater sectionalism between the North and South?
Northerners and Southerners rushed to Kansas to influence the vote on slavery. Tensions grew as they pushed their own agendas and eventually resulted to violence to accomplish their goals.

What was the original purpose of the Kansas-Nebraska Act and why did they add a popular sovereignty clause?
The original purpose was to build a railroad from the Louisiana purchase to the Gadsden territory to boost the state’s economy so Stephen Douglas could be elected again. However, he needed something to convince the South to vote for the bill.

Abraham Lincoln wanted to ban slavery in new territories. In states where it already existed he promised that he wouldn’t interfere with the institution of slavery. Stephen Douglas wanted states to decide on slavery through popular sovereignty.

The Fugitive Slave Act and the right for the rest of the Mexican Cession to decide on slavery through popular sovereignty. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 had a larger effect on the anti-slavery North because the North started to see in person the mistreatment of slaves when they were caught.

An abolitionist who used violent means to and was convicted of treason.
What did John Brown do during Bleeding Kansas?
He led an attack at Pottawatomie Creek.
What was Harpers Ferry and what was John Brown’s role in the raid?
It happened in 1859, led by John Brown, they raided Harpers Ferry, Virginia where weapons were stored in an attempt to arm enslaved and formerly enslaved people.
What was the reaction of the North and South to John Brown’s raid?
The North hailed John Brown as a martyr for what he did but the South thought that there might be more people like John Brown and started to organize militias.

What were the results of the Lincoln Douglas debates of 1858?
While Lincoln lost the debates he also gained attention as a spokesperson for abolitionists.
Compare Lincoln’s position to Douglas’ during the debates.
Lincoln:
He thought that if the country was divided about slavery it could not remain united, the entire country must have either no slavery or slavery throughout.
Douglas:
He believed that the issue of slavery was fine the way it was. He thought that if the people decided not to enforce the laws on slavery then that was their choice.
