What is kinetic theory?
States that everything is made of tiny particles
How is ice lost from the top of glaciers
By sublimation
Arrangement of solid
Forces of attraction hold particles closely together, the particles can vibrate but they cannot move around which explains why solids keep their shape and usually cannot be compressed
arrangement of liquid
particles are moving faster so the forces of attraction are not strong enough to hold them in fixed positions. The particles can move past each other so liquids flow and take the shape of their container. The particles are still very close together so they usually cannot be compressed
arrangement of gass
Particles are far apart and moving around quickly, gases are compressible and expand to fill their container
Is ice less dense tha nwater
Yes but this is unlike other substances where solid is more dense
Equation for density
mass/volume
for pressure where is force measured
Normal to the surface
What does pressure depend on for liquid
The density of the fluid
What does the pressure at any point in a fluid depedn on?
The weight of the fluid above
Equation for pressure due to a column of liquid
Hieght of collumn x density of liquid x gravitation field strength
