What did the Great Awakening encourage amongest the colonists?
It encouraged colonists to join together because of one religion. It also encouraged colonists to turn away from the old church rule.
What is the theory of mercantilism and how was it practiced during the colonial era in the U.S.?
The theory of mercantilism is that a nation could become strong by keeping strict control over its trade. They practiced mercantilism by exporting more goods than they imported.
How were colonial legislatures able to check the power of the British governor during colonial times?
The legislatures had the power over the money and they used this to check on the British governor.
The first French colonists in North America were mostly interested in what?
Fishing, trapping, and trading. They brought knives, kettles, and cloth in exchange for beaver fur which sold for a high price in Europe. They also wanted adventure and the main reason was to create wealth through trade was one of the main reasons for French colonization in America.
The Virginia Company established the House of Burgesses to do what?
To attract more settlers by making a more stable government. It sent a new governor with orders to consult settlers on all important matters.
The Separatists (pilgrims) established a colony because they wanted to do what?
They weren’t allowed to worship freely so the pilgrims left for Leyden but then they missed their English way of life and worried that their children were growing up more Dutch than English.
What did the Mayflower Compact show that the Pilgrims were ready for?
The Mayflower Compact established an important tradition of self-government. When the Pilgrims found themselves without a government, they banded together to make laws.
How did the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (under Thomas Hooker’s) influence the development of representative government in America?
The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut relied on people to obey the law and seek the common good, it gave the vote to all male property owners (this included non-church members), and it limited the governor’s power.
Why did the British take control of New Amsterdam?
The British took control of new Amsterdam because of the economic opportunities, the freedom to practice their own religion, and African slaves because they were in demand.
How did William Penn attract so many people to his colony?
So many people were attracted to Penn’s colony because people of different ethnicities and religions could live peaceably together.
