What is marketing?
finding out the needs of customers and fulfilling those needs in order to increase sales
What can the marketing department do to increase sales?
- Carry out market research to identify customer needs.
- Make decisions on the Marketing Mix which are appropriate to the target audience.
- Inform customers about their products and services and persuading them to buy them
What is market research?
the collection of data on consumer habits to help decision-making
What is primary research?
data collected first hand
What is an advantage of primary research?
- directly focused on research objectives
- more up to date
- provides more detailed insights
What is a disadvantage of primary research?
- time consuming + expensive
- risk of survey bias (samples may not be representative of population)
What are some examples of Primary research?
- questionnaires
- interviews
- testing/trails
- focus groups
What is an advantage of questionnaires?
- easy + cheap to carry out
- easy to target customers
What is a disadvantage of questionnaires?
- people may not understand questions
- people may not be interested in the product
What is an advantage of interviews?
- questions can be explained
- easy to target certain types of consumers
What is a disadvantage of interviews?
- expensive
- not everyone likes being interviewed
What is an advantage of testing/trails?
- good way to see if the product is what people want
- reduces risk involved in producing large quantities
What is a disadvantage of testing/trails?
- people/area tested must be representative of the trials market otherwise findings won’t help business
What is an advantage of focus groups?
- people chosen will be representative of potential customers
What is a disadvantage of focus groups?
- only in small groups
- expensive
What is secondary research?
when a business uses info that already exists
What are the advantages of secondary research?
- cheap + quick to collect
- wide range of data is available
What are the disadvantages of secondary research?
- might not be exactly what a business wants
- might be out of date
- may be difficult to analyse/understand
What are some examples of secondary research?
- Census data
- Websites
- Internal data
- Newspapers & magazines
- data published by other companies
What is qualitative data?
data based on opinions or those being asked
What is quantitative data?
data based on facts and numbers
What is market segmentation?
splitting the market for a product or service into different groups or categories
What are five ways the population could be divided?
- age
- gender
- income
- location
- lifetstyle
What are the benefits to market segmentation?
- helps target specific market
- better meet of customer needs
- avoid wasting money on broad adveristy
