What is human resource?
the people who do the work for a business
What is the purpose of H.R?
the work that must be done within a business (e.g production, finance, marketing, + h.r)
What are the objectives of a H.R department?
to ensure the business has the right number & type of workers to meet its objectives
How does the H.R meet their objectives?
HR planning - planning ahead to identify when new employees / skills might be needed.
Recruitment – hiring (& firing) employees.
Training – identifying training needs.
Motivation – using financial & non-financial motivation methods to boost the morale and productivity of workers.
What is an organizational structure?
how people + departments are organised within a business
Why does a business need an organizational structure?
- everyone knows their job
- everyone knows who they’re responsible to
- can help motivate workers
What is a hierarchy?
how many layers of authority are in a structure
What is a wide span of control?
- less layers of management to pass messages - reaches employees faster
- costs less money
What is a narrow span of control?
- allows manager to communicate quickly w employees
- may be costly
What is a tall organizational structure?
an organizational structure with many layers
